This new edition of Mitutoyo’s Metrology Handbook has been produced not only to update existing material but also to expand coverage into areas of dimensional metrology that seem to gain in importance with each passing year. Extensive additions and revisions have increased the number of chapters by two and the page count by 50% while maintaining the original aim of providing an informative and accessible reference to all levels of reader.

The opportunity has been taken to provide deeper coverage of the more commonly encountered uses of the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) together with an overview of specialist applications such as aerofoil and gear measurement. An appreciation of ISO10360 has been added to help prospective CMM users interpret manufacturers’ accuracy specifications. A separate chapter is devoted to the ever-expanding range of probing systems.

There is an increasing need for a sound appreciation of product specification principles and this has prompted an extensive revision of the Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) material. Drawings to explain feature definitions are now included and this much larger chapter is intended to provide enough detail for the reader to confidently progress to an accurate interpretation of the relevant international standards themselves.

Chapters on microscopes and contour measurement have been added for this revision and those on hardness testing and surface texture have been significantly extended. In particular, several key aspects of surface roughness measurement have been covered in some detail in an attempt to clarify a highly technical and standards-dependent subject that is often poorly understood within industry but which is steadily growing in practical importance.

This book is produced primarily as a source of reference for those attending a Mitutoyo Training course at the Mitutoyo Institute of Metrology, a City & Guilds Accredited Centre providing exclusive nationally accredited training awards in dimensional metrology. The content is based on having taught tens of thousands of engineers from a variety of industries, an experience which highlighted the need for a wide-ranging source of information to provide answers to the many questions raised during Mitutoyo dimensional metrology seminars. It may also be useful to anyone else who requires an overview of dimensional metrology in terms of its history, accepted practices and an appreciation of the wide choice of measuring equipment available today. The main feature of the book is the extensive use of colour photography to bring to life topics ranging from the Egyptian cubit to the latest types of measuring machine.

Manufacturing tolerances are shrinking and are now much tighter than they used to be. Therefore the ability to measure accurately is becoming increasingly important as well as being a vital aspect of the quest to maintain and improve product quality. Continuous reduction in variability – a key concept in quality improvement – is achieved by minimizing bias and variance in data. By learning how to measure correctly any personal bias that could affect measurement data is minimised. It should never be forgotten that untrustworthy data yields poor quality. How to improve the trustworthiness of measurement data is one of the central issues addressed by this handbook.
